Capital Hosts 3rd Annual PINK OUT Day for Breast Cancer Awareness!

In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. Also, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, and it is estimated that 41,070 people (40,610 women and 460 men) will die from breast cancer this year.

If these statistics shock you, you aren't alone! Fortunately, the average 5-year survival rate for people with breast cancer is 90%, and we want to join the cause until that number is 100%! Let's show that we care by supporting a PINK OUT day on Friday, October 20th

At Capital, we think our employees are the best, and we know you'll make this year's Pink Out Day even better than the previous two! Let's beat our 2016 numbers and spread the word!  Wear your pink clothing and accessories to show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  We will be posting pictures of our pink participants on our website, as well as on our social media pages so that our viewers can see how great our Capital Family truly is!

Once again, we will be awarding a $50 gift card to the person wearing the most PINK!  The winner will be selected at the end of the month, with results posted on our social media pages and in our company newsletter.  Please submit your photos via email to

Let's raise awareness together and show our pink pride!

Capital Healthcare Represented at NADSP Annual Meeting & Conference

Vicki Arnett, HHS Clinical Director/Senior Key Account Executive, was proud to represent Capital Healthcare’s Health & Human Services division at the National Association of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) Convention.  The event took place in Omaha, Nebraska on September 9-10th, 2017.  “The NADSP was well represented from coast to coast,” Vicki says.  “There were many Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in attendance, as well as administrators, supervisors, and management teams who came together to recognize the wonderful and dedicated workforce known as the Direct Support Professionals.”

One of the key discussion points of the convention was tackling the DSP crisis, which includes the 44.8% turnover rate for DSPs across the nation.  The “Fix the DSP Crisis” video, produced by the nonprofit organization, Pennsylvania Advocacy & Resources (PAR), does a fantastic job of highlighting these issues, and has been shared by Capital on multiple occasions.  Vicki, a huge proponent of raising support and awareness for the problems currently facing DSPs, had the pleasure of meeting Carol (as seen below), a mother who is featured in the video with her son.

Read more about the DSP Crisis and view the video on our News page.

Vicki relished in the opportunity to meet and network with individuals and IDD Community Member Companies from all over the country, all with the same mission and objective—supporting and celebrating the tireless efforts of the Direct Support Professional.  Together they had the privilege of attending many enlightening presentations from gifted speakers, including one from Judge Dan Butler (as seen below), recounting his own personal experiences of parenting five children, including one with cystic fibrosis and two with autism.  His inspirational stories, which left a mark on Vicki, paid tribute to the many DSPs who have helped Butler’s family along the way.

Vicki also had the pleasure of meeting Val Bradley (as seen below), one of the recipients of The John F. Kennedy Jr. Award for Direct Support Workforce Advocacy & Leadership.  Bradley, along with her colleague and fellow award recipient, Marianne Taylor, dedicated their careers to the upholding the vision of the NADSP and supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  It was truly an honor for Vicki to meet Val and personally thank her for all of her contributions.

Capital is grateful to have been able to participate in such a rewarding and enlightening convention.  We are so proud of our hard-working Direct Support Professionals, and being able to dedicate this time to their noble profession was an incredible opportunity.

A Night at the Pirates Game with NHS Allegheny Valley Schools

 PNC Park

On Tuesday, June 13th, Capital Healthcare had the honor of supporting NHS Human Services and Allegheny Valley Schools for their “Night at the Pirates Game.”  It was a great opportunity for us to come together with our colleagues and clients to support these exceptional organizations, all while rooting for the Buccos!

NHS Allegheny Valley School (NHS/AVS) sent a letter thanking us for our support and sponsorship.  The letter reads in part:

We are thrilled that you were able to join us at the Pirates Game!  Thank you for your support of NHS Allegheny Valley School (NHS/AVS).

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Capital Development Fund, helping to maintain and improve the services we provide to 850 consumers with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Pennsylvania.

The event provided us with an opportunity to socialize and enjoy Pirates baseball in beautiful PNC Park. We are so grateful for your support which is helping the individuals at NHS/AVS to live with purpose and dignity, and to their fullest potential.

We greatly enjoyed this opportunity, and look forward to next year’s event!

Capital HealthSPARE Wins Award from NHS Bowling Tournament

NHS Bowling Certificate for Capital's Team

While Capital HealthSPARE’s scores at the NHS Bowling Tournament (see article below) were nothing to brag about, their integrity made them winners after all!  The team recently received a letter and certificate awarding them with the title of “Most Honest Team” from the NHS Human Services Foundation.

The letter reads:

Thank you for your support of and commitment to NHS Allegheny Valley School and NHS.  It was great of you and your colleagues to bowl at Zone 28 on May 2nd.  We hope you had a terrific time!

Congratulations on your winning of the Most Honest Team...

Your generosity  and compassion ensures that NHS will continue to provide innovative and state-of-the-art solutions to support the unique needs of the children and adults we serve.  Through your support, NHS can continue to serve our vulnerable population in a caring and responsive environment that promotes the highest standards of integrity and quality.

We are so proud of our team, and the way in which they represented Capital Healthcare.  They are a shining example of our core values, and what makes Capital such a special company to work for and be a part of!

Capital "Strikes Up" Fun and Memories at the 3rd Annual NHS Bowling Tournament

Capital HealthSPARE

On Tuesday, May 2, 2017 Capital Healthcare Services were well represented at the 3rd Annual Bowling Tournament for the NHS Human Services Foundation at Zone 28 in Pittsburgh, PA. The NHS Human Services Foundation is the charity division of NHS, one of the nation's largest providers of education and human services, providing exceptional care and services to people with special needs throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Louisiana, and Michigan. The tournament's events occurred simultaneously in 3 locations: Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Philadelphia, for what NHS called: 1 Event*1 Day*1 Purpose.

This was the first time Capital participated in the event with their team “Capital HealthSPARE,” who spared no time in making connections networking with NHS staff, residents, and competitors. Participants truly got involved in team themes. One team called “The Pin Heads” who represented the Western PA Management team from Allegheny Valley Schools wore bowling pin hats during the event. Some of the other creative team names included “I Can’t Believe it’s not Gutter”, “Split happens”, “The Alley Cats”, and “The Bowling Stones.”

Capital’s Key Account Executive, Vicki Arnett was chosen by NHS to be interviewed about our participation in this event. Her interview was broadcast several times via a live news feed that appeared throughout this event to the Harrisburg and Philadelphia venues. It is always great to get state wide recognition as a company who has passion for compassion.

Strikes were few and far between, spares were scarce, and gutters were cleaned. However, fun was in abundance. “It was amazing to see the entire bowling alley taken over for this community fundraiser,” Vicki reflects.

Bowling Screen

Executive Assistant, Orion Fox says “While Capital HealthSPARE’s bowling skills may not have been a high point of the event, raising funds and creating awareness for such a special cause certainly was.  Speaking with NHS representatives and meeting some of our IDD clients truly shed light on the wonderful work that is being done not only across Pennsylvania but throughout communities in several states.”

Capital HealthSPARE did not qualify for the finals, despite being relentless to succeed.  However, this was not a problem, but an opportunity to meet new friends and win the hearts of many due to our dedication to the event and the Intellectual and Developmental communities we serve as a company.

members of our happy team

A special thanks to Art Hoopes- President and CEO of Capital Healthcare Services and those who supported our participation in this annual charitable event for NHS.

Also, a special thank you goes to all the enthusiastic bowlers: Vicki Arnett, Orion Fox, Justine Moyer, Brenda Kresic, Donna Wright (DSP), Desiree Green (DSP) and Volunteers:  Kirsten Bosman and Desiree Green Sr. (Mother of Desiree Green).

Capital Commemorates 'Take Your Daughter to Work Day'

Capital’s Key Account Executive, Vicki Arnett, had the pleasure of bringing her 15 year old granddaughter, Tysheaunah, to the office on April 27th for Take your Daughter to Work Day.  During Ty’s day in Capital’s Bethel Park office, she was able to observe the Employment Specialists, Account Executives, and even got to sit in on a Health & Human Services orientation. “She was enlightened as to what a Direct Support Professional is and does, and how important their job is to the ‘Everyday Lives’ of the unique population we serve,” Vicki says.

Vicki and TyTysheaunah concluded her visit with a letter, thanking everyone at Capital for making her visit so special:

Capital Healthcare Solutions 'Sees Red' for Women's Heart Health!

Wear Red Day Capital Irwin Office

Capital Healthcare Solutions is proud to participate in National Wear Red Day—a day when we pause in remembrance of the women who have lost their lives due to heart disease, and raise awareness for women’s heart health!  There is a common misconception that heart disease is primarily a man’s issue, but in fact, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States!

Wear Red Day Capital Bethel Park Office

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease killed 289,758 women in 2013, which equals out to 1 in every 4 female deaths.  Additionally, the American Heart Association has reported that, in 2013, heart disease took the life of 1 woman every 80 seconds.  This amount is equal to the female deaths caused by diabetes, chronic lower respiratory disease, and cancer combined!

Today, for all of these reasons and more, we wear red.  We thank all of our internal and external employees who proudly showed off their red attire with us, and invite you to do your part to spread the word to your friends and loved ones about the importance of heart health!

Capital Employees Support 2016 Pittsburgh Kidney Walk

Capital's Senior Employment Specialist, Lou Downey, connected with Kathy N, one of our valued Registered Nurses, for the chance to participate in the 2016 Pittsburgh Kidney Walk at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.  Lou and Kathy were joined by Lou's girlfriend, Valerie, and members of a team called "Reach Kidney Care" for the event to raise awareness for kidney disease.  Lou and Kathy have developed a special bond in the last year working together, and they had a fantastic time supporting such a great cause!

Kidney Walk "Reach Kidney Care"

Lou and Kathy share their love of animals, and even created a special group they like to call "The Crew," which consists of them and their seven combined pets! "It was fitting with us having such a love of nature and our little fur-babies that we were able to spend an afternoon together walking around the Pittsburgh Zoo amongst kidney disease survivors and supporters alike," Lou says.  "I hope to be able to support many more causes like this as a Capital employee, and I encourage any of our passionate, dedicated employees to get me on board for YOUR next event!"

Kidney Walk - Lou, Valerie, and Kathy

Capital certainly appreciates the dedication of our hard working employees, like Lou and Kathy!  Developing personal relationships with our employees and clients is just one way that we, at Capital Healthcare, set ourselves apart from the competition!  If you have a charity event you would like for us to participate in, please let us know!

Capital Attends the 2016 Everyday Lives Conference in Hershey, PA

Capital's Senior Key Account Executive, Vicki Arnett, had a fantastic experience at the 2016 Everyday Lives Conference in Hershey, PA. She had the opportunity to do some valuable networking, participated in educational presentations and workshops, and most importantly, brought her new ideas and knowledge regarding individuals with developmental disabilities back here to us!

Vicki with Everyday Lives Sign

One of her favorite workshops was adding a piece of Capital Healthcare Solutions to the 2016 quilt, a long held tradition of the Everyday Lives conferences.  These wall hangings are pieced together by individuals, families, counties, support coordinators, provider services, direct support staff, and others.  We are very proud to be a part of this year’s quilt, and look forward to contributing to more in the future!

Vicki with Quilt at Everyday Lives Conference

She also had the opportunity to network with leaders from local communities, and on national levels as well, some of whom fall into the Intellectual Developmental Disability spectrum. Vicki says "they have shown me how amazing their abilities are,” and she was "very humbled to have met them!"
